“Bread … has been, since the beginning of history, the best ally for most civilizations to overcome famine. Lack of bread has caused revolutions, and its abundance was so important for politicians that it led Roman Emperors to say that they only needed ‘panem et circensis’ (bread and circus) to keep peace,” according to the organizers of World Bread Day (world-bread-day.com).
The event is sponsored by the International Union of Bakers and Bakers-Confectioners www.bakeruib.org. Today (Oct. 16, 2007) groups in Switzerland and Spain will hold events celebrating bread-making, a human art dating back to Stone Age practiced in most cultures around the world.
In America, the Colorado-based Grain Foods Foundation (www.grainpower.org) — a joint venture of members of the milling and baking industries formed in 2004 — has also sent out a press release (link here to Grain Foods Association release) calling attention to the holiday.
